Five years after opening to the public, Cavalli Estate in the Stellenbosch winelands has evolved into a versatile lifestyle destination deftly combining food, wine and art. ‘Cavalli’ may be the Italian word for ‘horses’, but this stylish winelands estate offers so much more than the world-class equestrian facilities that grace the long driveway leading into the 100-hectare estate.
Barnard has headed up the winemaking at Cavalli Estate since 2014, establishing the estate as one of the most dynamic young producers in the acclaimed ‘Golden Triangle’ of the Stellenbosch winelands. With his fifth harvest safely in the cellar, Barnard’s focus is firmly on Chenin Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon. The Cavalli Filly 2019 is a wonderful fresh and elegant Chenin Blanc laced with crisp layers of tropical and stone fruits complimented by notes of vanilla, honey and spiced oak. Mounds of citrus, lemon zest and vanilla compliment an exotically wooded aroma. The palate shows loads of peaches and apricots, yellow plums with a crisp acidity holding the wine together. Nine months French oak barrel maturation, with lovely freshness leads to a well-balanced wine with great palate length and a bright finish. The single-varietal Chenin Blanc ‘Filly’ is available online at R120 per bottle, or from the tasting room. Cavalli Estate is situated off the R44 between Stellenbosch and Somerset West. Wine tasting is offered from Wednesday to Sunday, 10am-6pm. For bookings or further information send a mail to wines@cavalliestate.com.
