West Coast Distillers produce artisanal hand crafted gin and bitters in the heart of Langebaan. Friends of over 20 years, Shaun and Shane, co-founded West Coast Distillers in 2017 out of a love for the ocean and a good drink. The plan was hatched on board a plane to Croatia and the rest, as they say, was history. Their solid friendship and business acumen is the success behind West Coast Distillers. Their aim is to produce high quality, great tasting spirits that are unique and exciting.
West Coast Distillers calls the picturesque town of Langebaan, South Africa, home. They are flanked by the West Coast National Park and the tranquil Langebaan lagoon. West Coast Distiller’s relaxed approach to life is well suited to this small ocean town.
Tasting Notes
A total of 12 botanical's are used to distill our gorgeous Caspyn gin. What makes it West Coast you ask, well, we use two locally foraged fynbos, namely Rooibos and Honeybush, as well as a Western Cape shrub called Pelargonium Citronellum, a beautiful lemon scented geranium. That, coupled with the addition of a few extra citrus botanical's during distillation, results in a flavour profile of fresh and crisp citrus notes that rises up next to the juniper in a contemporary manner.
On the nose
The citrus bursts are unmistakable and mouthwatering. Subtle floral notes from the Rooibos and Honeybush are also evident.
On the palate
Caspyn is very well-balanced Juniper forward gin, with a beautiful citrus undertone that rises up and sits next to the Juniper. There are also subtle floral notes coming from Honeybush and Rooibos used, with a very slight tartness in the background from the Hibiscus. Honeybush also give off a slight but noticable perceived sweetness. The finish is a fresh but spicy 'sherbet tingle' coming from black pepper and the
lemon botanical's. Very impressively, the Orris Root used in distillation enhances a lingering flavour on the palate well after you take a sip.
Caspyn West Coast Dry Gin is easy on the palate and can be enjoyed neat, on the rocks, as a gin and tonic, or in a variation of cocktails.
Food Pairing Notes
Caspyn's citrus notes make for a great pairing with sea foods, including fish and shellfish. A favorite of theirs is an Oyster Vinaigrette (Mignonette) made with Caspyn poured over the oyster before eating. Because of it being a Juniper forward gin, a Caspyn Martini pairs beautifully with strong Cheeses and Cured Meats. Light green salads, including (but not limited to) lettuce, cucumber, olives, feta cheese and
tomato go well while drinking Caspyn Gin & Tonics on a hot day! Fruit and fruit salads are another great pairing option.
