Darling Cellars Pyjama Bush Rosé 2021 has won the inaugural Allan Mullins Award at this year’s Rosé Rocks wine competition. The award, sponsored by Woolworths and Rotolabel was presented to the winemaking team by Allan’s widow, Thérèse Mullins, at Darling Cellars on Wednesday, 1 September.
Allan, a Cape Wine Master, was a consultant to Woolworths and a wine selector for close to 30 years.
The winning wine beat 138 other rosé wines to earn the accolade.
A total of 34 rosé wines secured Double Gold recognition, with 42 wines gaining single gold. Commenting on the awards Norma Ratcliffe, judging panel chair said; “The standard of wines entered this year was really exceptional. Winemakers are demonstrating real skill in making rosé wines with great balance, tight acidity and fruit delivery. I can confidently say that South Africa’s rosé wines stand up to the best that the South of France produces.”
Innovation was also evident with a number of canned wine entries. The Ben Wren Wine Co. secured a Gold Medal for its Delicious Rosé.
The judging panel included Praisy Dlamini, winemaker and general manager at Adama Wines; Chiara Fabietti, Italian winemaker and international judge; Munashe Kwaramba sommelier and winemaker; and Kelly-Marie Jacobs, winemaker at Distell.
This year marks the seventh year of the awards.
